Stop. Notice. Choose.
It sounds simple. But it’s one of the hardest, and most powerful, practices in wise leadership.
This post is part of my series exploring 8 aspects of Leading with Wisdom. A way of leading that draws not just on knowledge and experience, but on the rich inner resources we so often overlook. If you’re curious, follow along.
🔍 Today’s focus: Stop. Notice. Choose.
It’s illustrated in my image as a 🗺️ showing where you are now, where you hope to be, and the terrain in between.
But what does that have to do with wisdom?
Most senior leaders are excellent at doing. But many don’t realise how long they’ve been running on autopilot.
🧠 From the thinking brain’s perspective, we know that setting goals, tracking progress and removing distractions boosts success. There’s no shortage of advice on this.
But wisdom asks something deeper.
It asks us to pause.
To zoom out.
To check if we’re using the right map.
When you’re constantly keeping things moving: team, delivery, decisions. It’s easy to lose sight of your own direction.
And when we operate from habit instead of awareness, we’re not fully alive in our leadership.
We give away our agency.
And habits are always built on the past not on who you are now or who you’re becoming.
Some of the most powerful shifts I see in coaching start with a pause.
When a leader stops and really notices. Not just “What’s not working?”
But:
🤔 Where am I heading now?
🤔 What’s no longer true/mine?
🤔 What feels alive in me?
Last week I wrote about seasons and cycles and this connects deeply.
Your current season might need a new map.
Your internal GPS might be running on outdated software.
A few years ago, a friend asked me:
“Do you want to be living in this house in five years?”
Without hesitation, my whole body answered: No.
Then he asked:
“What are you waiting for?”
That one question led me to draw a completely new map.
I sold my house and moved to the countryside.
Not just for location but to reshape my whole way of living and working.
The wisdom is in noticing you can choose.
When leaders give themselves space to stop and take stock, big shifts become possible.
You might:
🥅 Redefine success
🔋 Reclaim energy from draining expectations
🚦 Choose to stay, leave, shift, or begin again
📢 Find the words for what you want, not what’s expected
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
But if you’re waiting for someone else to give you permission, that moment may never come.
🚢 You’re the one captaining the ship.
I just spoke to a client who realised she’s been waiting for her organisation to create her next opportunity.
She’s decided to take the reins herself.
You can’t control everything.
But you always have choices.
Often more choices than you think.
💬 Over to you:
⏸️ Where are you on autopilot?
⏸️ What choices have you postponed or ignored?
⏸️ When did you last look at your map?
👇 Let me know what this stirs for you or share if it resonates.
