Unlocking whole body intelligence: from heart and gut to mind.
Why leaders need to get out of their heads sometimes.
This post is part of my Leading with Wisdom series, exploring the rich inner resources leaders often overlook. You might want to follow along.
đź’ˇ From thinking to sensing
In my early leadership career, I chased intellectual achievements. Qualifications, badges, and external validation. Yet, I sensed that knowledge alone was never going to be enough.
We’re told
“Listen to your heart” or “Follow your heart”.
Wise words, but we need to practice tuning in to our intuition and inner wisdom to really connect into our heart and to lead from that space. That's not easy when we are conditioned to prioritise our brain intelligence.
đź«€ The power of the heart and gut
Research shows that our gut and heart communicate with the brain and
*more flows in this direction than from the brain into the body*
Our heart and gut send signals to our body and trigger responses before the mind can register what's happening.
The HeartMath Institute has shown how heart intelligence can respond to stimuli before the brain catches up.
We see this with survivors of trauma who often report a “feeling” they ignored because they lacked evidence to support it.
đź«·Imagine the power leaders could harness if they learned to trust those signals.
🧠The intelligence we ignore
We have at least three brains (gut, heart, and head) working in harmony in one nervous system and one body.
Yet, we cut ourselves off from two-thirds of our intelligence and make ourselves slower to sense, to feel and to know in a world demanding speed.
Animals thrive by honing all their instincts; we can regain that too.
Why wouldn’t we want to understand and meet all our needs and desires? We need to be able to drive our most important operating system, our whole being.
You might have worked with leaders who draw on intuition, I have. They seem to be able to sniff out change in the air before others have begun to notice.
👟 Leading from the whole
True leadership requires integrating all these intelligences.
By practicing tuning in to subtle cues, we make better decisions, deepen connections, and lead with authenticity.
We move out of our overthinking patterns that can't tell the difference between fact and fiction and keep us stuck and exhausted.
